James has been recognised as Private Equity legal team-leader (2012), Corporate M&A JV Specialist (2013), Singapore Investment Funds Lawyer (2014) and Outstanding Corporate Lawyer (2015) by legal reporters & offshore publishers for his work whilst in practice as a partner or director of law firms in Singapore.
Initially trained in litigation, James switched to corporate practice early on in his career and has since established himself in this direction. He spent his initial years in Capital Markets practice in the Singapore joint venture law firm of Allen & Overy, Shook Lin & Bok between 2000 and 2001, before leaving the shores of Singapore to practice in London. There, he gained experience in Financial Restructuring and worked with Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft as well as Kirkland & Ellis, and was intricately involved in structuring cross-border insolvency debt workouts.
James returned to Singapore in 2005 and served as group counsel to a private equity investment fund manager, for over 7 years. With his extensive international experience and industry know-how, he was invited in 2012 to practise with Duane Morris & Selvam as a Director until 2015. Thereafter, he dedicated his time to establishing Lex Advocatus.
James also served as a member of SCCA's International Liaison subcommittee (2005-2011) and as its honorary auditor (2011-2012) appointed by its General Committee during his time as general counsel of the private equity fund manager. James is currently the honorary legal advisor to SCCA's management council.
